Cycling in Weymouth and Portland

The Weymouth and Portland Borough Council has responsibilities as agents for the County Council as Local Highway Authority . The Sustrans Report was commissioned in 1992 and, since then, considerable progress has been made to enhance and encourage cycling within the Borough. Developments have included Radipole Park Drive, Preston Beach Road and the Rodwell trail. The Rodwell Trail will form part of the National Cycle Network. By 2005 it is proposed that a route will be signposted (Route 26) from Portland Bill to Weymouth and on to Dorchester where it will link with routes radiating from the town.

This Cycling Section of the W and PBC Website is sponsored by the Dorset Cyclists' Network (DCN) – Weymouth and Portland Branch.

It is the policy of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council to encourage cycling both for environmental reasons and for the health of all those who live in, or visit, this popular area. In order to maximise the cycling facilities provided, the Weymouth and Portland Branch of the Dorset Cyclists' Network have been given the opportunity to help publicise both cycling events and cycle routes within the Borough.

This part of the website is aimed at all those who cycle, or are thinking of starting cycling, and it is hoped that it will encourage more cycling leading to improved health and fitness and reduced traffic congestion as well as decreased pollution.
