Weymouth and Portland is fortunate in having a very rich heritage, and a large number of Listed Buildings. These are old buildings of historical and architectural importance, and special planning requirements apply to development which affects Listed Buildings, either when work to the building itself is undertaken, or development is proposed in the vicinity of a Listed Building. This is called Listed Building Consent and may be required in addition to Planning Consent. It is important to note that both the inside as well as the outside of a Listed Building is protected for its historic importance, and so structural work to the inside should also be discussed with the Borough Council's Conservation Officer in the Planning Unit before it takes place. It is important to appreciate that damage to a Listed Building can be a criminal offence, so please ask before starting any work to a Listed Building!
These are historical areas of the Borough which usually, but not always, contain a number of Listed Buildings and can include extensive areas; for example; Weymouth Town Centre or much of Radipole and Broadwey, including areas of the Wey Valley, which provide a rural setting for the historic buildings in these areas. In Conservation Areas, more stringent planning controls apply, and Conservation Area Consent may be required for development. Details of the boundaries of these Conservation Areas and advice on whether particular buildings are listed or not, and which consents are required, are available from staff in the Planning Unit.
