The office of the Bereavement Services Division of the Weymouth and Portland Borough Council is located at the Weymouth Crematorium, Quibo Lane Weymouth. From here the Council's four Cemeteries and the Crematorium are administered and any public enquires answered. A team of 7 administrative and operational staff, are available to assist the bereaved and Funeral Directors.
We endeavour to offer the highest calibre service and our reputation for excellent compassionate service to the public enables us to go out of our way meeting the wishes of the bereaved.
Bereavement Services provides burial facilities at four cemeteries:
The oldest cemetery is the Melcombe Regis cemetery, which was opened in 1856. All the original registers for the above cemeteries are held at the Weymouth Crematorium office and can be inspected by appointment.
All the above-mentioned cemeteries have land still available for burial. Part of the Weymouth, Melcombe Regis and Portland cemeteries have areas set aside for the burial of stillborn children and infants. There is provision for the burial of cremated remains at all cemeteries.
Bereavement Services has recently adopted the charter for the Bereaved, which incorporates 33 rights concerning burial and cremation services and memorial regulations. A wide variety of memorial types are available in different cemeteries with kerbs allowed in all cemeteries. It is important to realise that along with the rights the bereaved also have responsibilities, for ensuring that they comply with the regulations that have been adopted for the benefit and safety of all who visit and work in cemeteries. The responsibility for the maintenance and safety of the memorial erected is that of the family. To aid this the authority insists that all memorials are erected in accordance with the code of working practice compiled by NAMM (National Association of Monumental Masons).
Weymouth Crematorium was opened in 1939 and occupies a 6-acre site shared with Weymouth Cemetery.
The crematorium chapel at Weymouth seats approximately 100 mourners and is equipped with an electronic organ and audio equipment for playing compact discs (Cd's). An induction loop system is installed for the hard of hearing. The chapel is on a single level, giving easy access for wheelchairs and if required a wheelchair is available. A member of staff will be available to offer assistance required. It is your right to hold a service defining the type of music and ceremony that you would like. Any aspect of the service may be discussed in advance with members of staff at the Weymouth Crematorium office who will be happy to assist you.
Gardens of Remembrance are located at the Weymouth Crematorium and the Portland Cemetery. The gardens at the Portland Cemetery offer the facilities for cremated remains to be scattered and a Portland Stone Memorial Plaque affixed to the wall of remembrance within the garden.
The gardens at the Weymouth Crematorium are large lawned areas with a good selection of roses, trees and shrubs. Rose beds are at the centre of the gardens allowing for the placing of memorial plaques adjacent to roses and trees. Memorial seats are located and are available for lease within the grounds, along with stone memorial plaques that can be purchased and fixed to the memorial walls enclosing the gardens. A tree dedication scheme is available with a tree plaque that can be dedicated to a loved one beneath a mature or newly planted tree.
The Book of Remembrance is a permanent memorial and is housed in its own room, where floral tributes can be placed. There a many other memorial options available so please feel free to request a memorial information pack outlining the various options in more detail.

The Weymouth and Portland Borough Council has recently adopted the Charter for the Bereaved. The aim of this charter, issued by the Institute of Burial and Cremation Administration, is to improve and update cemetery and crematoria services. It is intended to identify the rights of everyone who experience bereavement and assist them in influencing the type of service they receive. A detailed reference copy can be obtained from the Institute's Charter Organiser at a cost of £25.00
As part of the Charter it is your right to have a burial or cremation organised and conducted in a dignified and orderly manor, supported by competent, professional and caring staff. It is also your right to place a memorial within the constraints of regulations in force or to leave the grave unmarked.
