Parking in Weymouth and Portland

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council are responsible for the management and enforcement of on-street parking within their Borough (as agents for the local Highway Authority - Dorset County Council). We also provide and operate a number of off-street car parks (mostly pay and display), which between them can provide parking for approximately 6,500 vehicles.

Although we are a major holiday destination, at the heart of the World Heritage Coastline, as we are situated on a peninsular which is surrounded by unspoilt countryside and the sea, there are only three main roads into our Borough. Additionally, many of our town centre streets (which have retained their unique character, with numerous historic buildings) were designed in the 18th Century, long before the age of the motor car.

Good parking management is therefore essential to ensure that both residents and visitors can move freely and safely within the Borough, by whichever means of transport they may choose or, of course, on foot.

It is the Council's task to keep traffic flowing, whilst also ensuring that, wherever possible, there is a fair and adequate allocation of our parking resources to meet the varied needs of residents, visitors and businesses.

Whatever your reason for parking within Weymouth and Portland, we hope that you will find the information given in this section of our website of assistance.
